FOR KATRINA YOUNG PEOPLE
Most young people in the suburbs of New Orleans cannot play in their middle-school or high school bands because most instruments were destroyed in the hurricane and bands are now just being formed as funds for leadership become available. Neither schools nor parents have funds to purchase new instruments. Young people are losing out. In responding to a request from the New Orleans community, the Spiritual Aims and Human Values committee of Carmichael Kiwanis Club in Sacramento is asking the Sacramento and Placer communities to join them in making a difference in the lives of these young people by donating used band instruments (in cases, if possible) which are probably languishing in closets gathering dust. Kiwanis clubs in Divisions 7 and 44 as well as many churches in Sacramento and Placer counties are cooperating. A certified instrument repair person in New Orleans has volunteered to make necessary repairs. This does not in any way conflict with any group's financial or programming concern... Donations are tax deductible and 501 C forms will be available. The plan for Mission Possible ? The instruments can be brought to your regular club meeting each week through Sunday, April 29 . Each Kiwanian will have friends who will have instruments not currently used who will want to be a part of this wonderful program. Perhaps you or another member would remind the group at each March meeting to find some instruments. I'm requesting that you keep the instruments in a safe place until you notify me to pick them up. Another possibility would be to bring your current donations to DCM in March. I will personally deliver all of the donations by truck to New Orleans in early May and present them to some very appreciative Kiwanians and school officials. Hopefully, this will be a workable plan for you. If not, call me. Upon your request, if you think it would be helpful, I will be happy to present this at your regular meeting early in March For information, call Chaplain Sarge Wright.
